Search is one of the three main ways to find and retrieve documents.

Main characteristics:

Search

•single or multiple libraries
•specify search criteria, either a simple text filter, or more advanced document property-based filter
•each search assigned a unique ID where results will be stored after the search is complete
•performed in a background process with completion status reported intermittently
•saved searches with user prompting can be created by administrators for ease of use
•search results can be further processed using 'Bulk Actions'

(See the topic Browse, Search, OneDoc Comparison for a comparison with other methods)

While the Browse feature operates on documents within a single library, the SEARCH feature allows you to find and filter documents across multiple libraries.

Because a search operation has the potential to read from thousands or millions of documents, the search interface has been designed to launch a "background" task and report back it's completion status at periodic intervals through a page refresh.

That way, an operator can go about other business and check the completion status periodically.

If there are no active or recent searches populating the list, this is how the main search page looks:

At this point, either of the left-most icons at the top of the page are available to define a new search or run a saved search.
